Look mom, we made it! Sterling Homes was recently featured in a local newspaper article about the Farm at South Village! When, at the end of the 2016 growing season, the Farm at South Village was in dire need of infrastructure improvements, the Sterling Homes Team stepped up to aid the cause. With $10,000 donated for material by South Village residents Richard Horn and Ann Patterson, Sterling Homes put in the legwork. Built pro-bono, the new barn stands red and proud, ready to supply fresh, organic, sustainable veggies to the local community.
This was an interesting and fun project for us here at Sterling. We thought long and hard about exactly what kind of structure would fit the needs of the farm, and at long last came up with this design. This is a fully functional, visually well regarded new age barn. More than just a pretty face, we constructed the barn with both form and function in mind as well. Built with a loft, and subsequently room for a future mezzanine, along with room for a shed roof expansion, we wanted the farm to be prepared for if and when they decide to grow.
This isn’t just any barn, either. The Farm at South Village has a social mission on top of being a functioning supplier of wholesome organic produce. This 12-acre organic farm plays a vital role in both the South Village community, as well as the surrounding area. One example of this is the fact that it donates fresh produce to Meals on Wheels, a local nonprofit that delivers premade meals straight to the front door of older adults that are unable to prepare their own. Or, you could look at the upcoming Growing Gardens, Growing Kids program, where approximately 100 children a week will go to the farm, learn to grow vegetables, and learn about nature. With those kinds of social conscience chops, how can you not want to do whatever you can to support them?
In the last 6 months, more than $30,000 were raised in the South Village Community in support of the Farm. By donating our time and energy to such a great cause, we here at Sterling Homes feel good about the fact we are supporting an example of sustainable community development. We recognize that this is more than a farm. The Farm at South Village represents both a lot of hard work and foresight. This is the future of community development in the United States, and we are more than happy to lend a hand and be part of that revolution (and get some tasty produce, too!)
