This summer Sterling Homes has taken on a fleet of interns; three to be exact. The intern program has been running for many years, helping young adults gain experience across many different fields such as construction, sustainable design, and business. This year, the three interns have been working on integrating into the Sterling Homes team since the beginning of June, learning something new each day. In fact, if you end up calling the Sterling Homes office, it’s pretty likely that one of us will be on the other end. Besides answering phones, you may be wondering, what do these interns actually do?
Our first Intern is McKinley…
McKinley is Collin’s assistant on all things green. She is a junior at the University of Vermont studying Environmental Studies with a concentration in ecological design and a minor in Green Building. Her future goal is to work in sustainable design and construction and she is very interested in green building programs. On a typical day, McKinley works on the green slides for each house that is currently going through the building process. During these endeavors, she collects photos of homes and projects and labels them with highlighted aspects of the homes sustainability. Sometimes Mckinley even accompanies Collin to conferences like Residential Energy Building Standard training and the Vermont Green Home Alliance. McKinley also sits in on client meetings and contract signings, as well as works on site and house plans, draft contracts, and construction specifications.
Our next intern is Nate…
Nate mostly works with our ‘Finance and Office manager’, Holly. He recently completed his sophomore year at the University of Mississippi. He is a member of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and is majoring in Accounting with a minor in Management Information Systems. Nate does many important things as a member of the Sterling Homes team, whether it’s around the office or in the field. With the Sterling Homes Office Manager’s guidance, Nate analyzes and catalogues purchase orders and bills that come in daily, sometimes dropping them off at the bank. He also is in charge of obtaining permits for the job sites and dropping them off to their respective locations. When he is not in the office, Nate works on the job sites, doing various construction work such as putting up sheet rock, moving furniture, and pulling fencing.
Our last intern is Hannah…
Hannah is mostly an assistant to Edith, the ‘Selections and Marketing Manager’. She is a rising junior at the University of Vermont, studying environmental science with a concentration in ecological design and a minor in community and international development. Hannah has been doing many different things. On a daily basis Hannah can be found virtually filing and organizing pictures and documents, writing blog posts (like this one!), updating the client portal, and researching new marketing approaches. Sometimes she assists Collin on his job site visits to check on progress, but she also sits in on meetings with real estate agents and clients that are beginning the home selections process.
One thing to say for sure is that all of us interns are grateful to have this opportunity to work with Sterling Homes. We have all learned so much each and every day about what it really takes to run a construction company.
